The Mikoyan MiG-15 (Russian: МиГ-15) was the first Soviet jet fighter to enter mass production. It was designated “Fagott” in NATO code. The production of jet-powered fighter aircraft represented a major qualitative leap in the USSR’s industrial sector. The MiG-15 soon became a major export success and was deployed by Warsaw Pact nations as well as Asian and African countries. Aircraft of this type participated in many conflicts; they achieved their greatest fame during the Korean War, where they engaged in aerial combat with their American counterpart, the North American F-86 “Sabre.”
