The Grumman F-14 TOMCAT is the legendary American carrier-based supersonic fighter. Its distinguishing feature is the variable geometry of its wings. The fighter was developed and manufactured by the Grumman Corporation. It was designed to defend the fleet by achieving air superiority. It was also used for tactical reconnaissance. Later modifications enabled it to carry bombs intended for ground attacks. The F-14 entered service with the US Navy in 1972. The main user was the United States. In 1976, 79 aircraft were exported to Iran, some of which are still in service today. The aircraft was officially retired from service by the US Navy on 22 September 2006. The F-14 TOMCAT fighter gained great fame not only for its striking appearance and variable wing geometry, but also for its appearance in the 1986 cult film TOP GUN. The main character, Maverick (Tom Cruise), is an F-14A TOMCAT fighter pilot!
