F-16 in the Royal Norwegian Air Force
Norway was one of the pioneers in the European F-16 procurement and co-production programme. On 21 July 1975, it signed an agreement with Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark to purchase modern multi-role fighters. The choice fell on the American F-16 Fighting Falcon project, which revolutionised modern aviation with its manoeuvrability, modern avionics and relatively low operating costs.
In service for over four decades!
The Norwegian F-16s differed from other aircraft of this type due to their light grey paint scheme, the Norwegian flag on the tail and a unique numbering system based on American numbers. Norway’s short, snow-covered runways, which are often scattered across the country, required the F-16s to be equipped with drag chutes to cope with situations where conventional wheel brakes could not be used.
Over four decades in service, Norwegian F-16s were involved in many major international operations under the auspices of NATO, including in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya, as well as in monitoring Baltic airspace as part of NATO air policing.

After 42 years of service, the Norwegian F-16’s final operational flight took place on 6 January 2022. Although the aircraft were withdrawn from active service, many remained airworthy and found a new lease of life – some ended up in Romania, whilst others were sold to training organisations.
