The development of the world’s most mysterious bomber
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is an American strategic stealth bomber in a flying wing configuration, capable of carrying conventional and nuclear weapons. The B-2 was developed in response to Soviet radar systems. The programme began in 1981, with the maiden flight taking place in 1989. Over 130 aircraft were planned, but following the end of the Cold War, only 21 were produced. The enormous costs meant that the price of a B-2 exceeded 2 billion US dollars, making it the most expensive aircraft in history. Thanks to its stealth technology and global reach, which enables very long combat missions, the B-2 has been in service since 1999, including in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

In June 2025, B-2 bombers took part in bombing raids on targets in Iran and remain a key element of strategic deterrence to this day.
