Their greatest archenemy is Shredder, the leader of the Foot Clan. Directed by Steve Barron, the 1990 independent film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presents the origin story of Splinter and the Turtles, their initial meeting with reporter April O'Neil and vigilante Casey Jones, and their first confrontation with the villain Shredder and his Foot Clan criminal ninja group. Donatello, known as Don or Donnie to his brothers, is the scientist, inventor, engineer, and technological genius of the group. His name is inspired by the Renaissance artist and sculptor from Florence, Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi).
